WTU Area Vice Presidents

Kader Nsiri

Kader Nsiri, VP of Elementary

“I am on the executive board of the WTU to empower teachers, foster a culture free from fear and retaliation, and create a thriving school community. I believe in a future for DCPS where every classroom has the technology and resources it needs—working Smart Boards, computers for every student and teacher, and all the tools for success. Together, we can make our schools places where teachers, students, and families are proud to be.”

As a Special Education teacher at Barnard Elementary School, Kader brings years of union leadership and advocacy to her role. She served as an Alternate Building Delegate for three years, followed by three years as a Building Representative. Since 2022, she has held the position of Vice President of Specialized Services as an elected member of the WTU Executive Board. She is also a proud member of the WTU Contract Negotiating Bargaining Team.

Her experience and dedication make her a strong candidate to represent and uplift the voices of middle school educators across DCPS.

Dylan Craig

Dylan Craig, VP of Senior High

“I want to work to build a union that is organized and responsive. I imagine a Washington Teachers' Union that keeps members informed through clear and transparent communication, addresses member issues promptly, and builds member power to fight for our communities. We can build an organization that fights for the common good, and an organization that others can count on to fight beside them. We can bring members out, and through this, we can stop simply putting out fires and become proactive in fights that strengthen public schools and all public services in the city.”

As an English Language Arts teacher at Garnet-Patterson STAY High School, Dylan brings a strong commitment to union organizing and member advocacy. She currently serves as Vice President of High Schools on the WTU Executive Board, a role she assumed in October 2023. Within her school, she has led as LSAT Chair since July 2024 and served as Building Representative from July 2021 to August 2024. Her broader union involvement includes serving as an American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Delegate from June 2023 through Summer 2024, and as a member of the WTU Membership Organizing Committee from June 2020 to September 2022. Her leadership reflects a deep dedication to building a union that is proactive, inclusive, and rooted in the collective strength of its members.

Sam Bertocchi, VP of Special Education

“Through beginning to organize with special education teachers around issues facing our self-contained classrooms, I’ve been amazed by the potential we bring to this work. I’m looking forward to building a strong network for our special education teachers and for the Union as a whole to work toward change in the issues we care about.”

As a Special Education teacher at Tubman Elementary School, Sam has consistently demonstated a commitment to advocacy and leadership within the Washington Teachers’ Union. She currently serves as a Building Representative and has previously held the same role, reflecting her ongoing dedication to representing her colleagues. From 2022 to 2025, she served as a Member At Large for Elementary Schools on the WTU Executive Board, and she was a member of the WTU Bargaining Team for the latest contract negotiations. Her work centers on amplifying the voices of special education teachers and building collective power to address the challenges they face in classrooms across the district.

Candi Peterson, VP of Specialized Services

“I want to continue to help shape the direction of our union, its leadership, and ensure that teachers’ and service providers’ interests are represented, and voices are heard.”

She currently serves on the WTU Executive Board and has twice held the position of WTU General Vice President (2010–2013 and 2016–2019). Candi has also served as a Building Representative during multiple terms, including 2018–2019 and 2019–2020, and has been elected to that role many times throughout her career. Her dedication to union leadership and advocacy continues to shape a more inclusive and responsive WTU.
